Where the Heart Is

A young Lani crouches in the valley outside the city in the rain. Beside her is a wheelbarrow.

LANI (NARRATION): Marino stayed true to her word over the next few months. We were fed and taken care of by the Church.

Lani picks a few flowers and examines them in her hands.

LANI (NARRATION): Soon enough, it was time for Nerez to become a real member. I wasn't allowed to see the ceremony, so I kept myself busy with work.

Lani walks along the sidewalk in the rain.

LANI (NARRATION): They were supposed to be home by 5:00, but instead of being greeted by them at that time, I was greeted by Marino and some others.

Marino and a couple other cultists stand beneath the awning of Lani and Nerez's flower shop.

MARINO: There she is.

Marino's arms are behind her back as she scowls at Lani.

MARINO: Ms. Difonia, where is your sibling?

LANI: I thought they were supposed to be with you guys.

MARINO: They were, but CLEARLY they're not. Have you seen them?

LANI: N-no.

There is a zoom in on one of Marino's angry eyes.

MARINO: REALLY?

Her scowl down at Lani intensifies.

MARINO: You should both know that leaving us goes against all our Venerable Star stands for. Are you sure you're not lying to save their skin?

Lani looks shocked and concerned.

LANI (NARRATION): That was the first time I'd seen that side of her. Over the next year or two, she continued to think I'd lied to her and started treating me worse because of it.

LANI (NARRATION): ...So, I left.

last full page of lani's backstory! once again, the rules only exist at marino's whims, even for those who aren't necessarily members.
