The once-vibrant city is now dirty and battered.
LANI (NARRATION): Despite losing so many customers and struggling to find food, we kept running the business. It was the only remaining predictable part of our lives. How could we leave it behind?
Nerez leans their cheek onto one hand beside a cash register, looking at something (or someone) unknown. The bell at the shop's entryway makes a ding-a-ling sound.
LANI (NARRATION): One day, we got a visitor.
Marino stands in the shop's doorway. She isn't wearing a mask, allowing us to see she's an older woman. She smiles gently.
LANI (NARRATION): It was Marino.
We see a shot of the lower half of Marino's face in profile as she smiles and talks. She gestures with her hands as she speaks.
LANI (NARRATION): She talked animatedly about a world free from despair. A world free from hunger and misery.
LANI (NARRATION): ...And we listened.
Lani and Nerez stare at Marino as she speaks. Lani is leaned forward slightly with her mouth agape while Nerez's brow is furrowed and they're frowning.
LANI (NARRATION): She promised that if we ever visited the Church of the Star, we'd be fed and taken care of.
Nerez's brow furrows further.
LANI (NARRATION): Nerez wasn't sure what to make of it all. Looking back, they were right to be wary.
Marino casts a glance over her shoulder at Nerez as she leaves. She smiles mysteriously and a large portion of her face is cast in shadow. The bell rings again as Marino steps outside.
LANI (NARRATION): We shouldn't have ever gone, but without food, what other choice did we have?
