Where the Heart Is

We return to present day. Lani shuts her eyes sadly and slouches slightly in her chair.

LANI: I don't know when Nerez disappeared. Maybe it was before they'd met with the Church that day. Maybe it was after. Either way, the Church was never able to find them and neither was I.

We see Nerez standing with their back to the camera and their arms crossed in front of a bright sky.

LANI: Marino said they probably hadn't up and disappeared–they'd intentionally left because they were tired of being responsible for taking care of me.

LANI: Deep down, I know she's right. In a world like this, who in their right mind would want to take care of a kid who might as well be dead weight?

Ísja frowns, glancing off to the side.

LANI: Ultimately, my being tied to this chair is my own fault. I should've done more to take care of both myself and them. Then, they wouldn't have left.

Num frowns as well.

A door swings open with a screeching sound. The light from it reveals a stairway leading toward the captured trio. A group of cultists stand in the doorframe, staring down at the trio. Lani continues to look sad.

CULTIST 1: Time to go.

Chapter 3 Page 9

something something cognitive dissonance (and insert page 69 joke here even though TECHNICALLY this is page 67 since comic fury accounts for the cover and cw pages)
