Where the Heart Is

Marino continues to look at Lani.

MARINO: Let's think this through together, shall we?

In Marino's imagination, Lani stands at the far outskirts of Noarata and looking at the city. Somehow, she's made it through the quagmire.

MARINO: You somehow make it out of Noarata. In that moment, you think you finally feel happy.

Lani begins walking away from Noarata. There's more greenery out here.

MARINO: But you soon come to a realization.

Lani walks through an area that is starting to become more wooded.

MARINO: You are utterly alone in an unfamiliar place. No one will help you if things go wrong. No one can save you when you're lost.

We transition to Marino imagining Lani in front of a campfire with some other folks. She's smiling.

MARINO: Let's say you somehow manage to survive. Maybe you find a town to stay in, maybe not. You find people who you think might understand you.

One of the people around the fire has a gun behind their back. Lani, sitting across from them, remains unaware, still smiling.

MARINO: You fail to notice their true intentions until it's too late.

We transition back to the current moment. Lani is looking progressively more upset.

MARINO: You really didn't think any of this through, did you?

Marino puts her hands out dramatically.

MARINO: Ms. Difonia, there's no such thing as a safe place and there's certainly no such thing as a good person. Even if there was, they'd leave you the first chance they got because they see you for what you are: a liability to their survival. Someone who only serves herself. Someone who doesn't understand the concept of "community".

just imagine the life you could have! ha ha! not that you're gonna wind up having it! sucker!
