Where the Heart Is

A man with long-ears looks down at Ísja, Num, and Lani from the wagon.

MAM’TI: I’d really hate to spoil the fun if the goal here is death, but… I’m just not sure my conscience could take a hit like that.

He leans his face into one of his hands, gritting his teeth.

MAM’TI: Not with the day I’m having, anyway…

SIRIUN (FROM INSIDE THE WAGON): Mam’ti, what’s the holdup, man?

Mam’ti pinches the bridge of his nose.

MAM’TI: Nothing, Siriun. Just some idiots hoofing it through the desert even though there are lefril around.

SIRIUN (FROM INSIDE THE WAGON): BAHAHA, REALLY!? Man, they’re lucky they survived long enough to get this far!

Mam’ti full-on puts his head in his hands.

MAM’TI (QUIETLY): …Are you people coming in, or not?

Lani stares up at Mam’ti while Num looks thoughtful. Ísja’s hands are clasped together as he smiles up at Mam’ti.

ÍSJA: You mean it, sir?

MAM’TI: ‘course. Better hurry up before I change my mind, though.

Lani turns to Ísja and Num.

LANI: …I’m pretty sure we can walk the rest of the way, right?

ÍSJA: Huh?
