Where the Heart Is

Ísja and Num approach Lani and the archer. Ísja claps his hands together, smiling nervously.

ÍSJA: Heyyy, Lani! Turns out we're a little far away from any Pocket to Aitaran.

LANI: Oh. That's fine.

She gestures to the archer, who is looking distressed.

LANI: Do you mind translating what this guy's saying? Seems like he really wants to talk.

The archer reaches out toward Ísja and Num, appearing to become more distressed. Ísja and Num are unable to see him, however, and continue looking at Lani instead.

NUM: Lani... There's no one there.

The archer retracts his hand.

LANI: ...What?

The archer looks down at his feet despondently.

ÍSJA: That's the thing about the Dreamscape. The magic here is so dense that it starts messing with your head. ...Or worse. That's what makes it so dangerous.

Lani looks unsure.

ÍSJA: We need to get you out of here as quick as we can.

LANI: But...

Lani glances over at the archer, who's still looking very sad.

LANI (THINKING): There's something about this guy. I don't know what that something is, though.

man i love it when characters hardly know anything about the things they're talking about LOL. adds flavor to the characters themselves while also giving me a convenient excuse to explain things in a limited (or straight up incorrect, but ísja IS technically right, here) way :) . gotta say, though, i'm very excited for my fun little magic researcher character to show up and explain magic (and by extension dreamscape-related) principles in a way that flies way over lani and co's heads a few chapters from now, haha!
